The Science of Sound - Airs Sept 7th

Put on your listening caps -- it's time to head back to school! We'll be exploring the mechanics behind how sound actually works. Recorded in 1958, this album became an important educational title for more than 30 years. Fascinating recordings describe and demonstrate the phenomena of sound and explore how we hear using an ample helping of sound effects and audio tricks to illustrate various points. The album is both a remarkable document of a previous era and a timeless lesson in understanding what it means to hear. The Science of Sound was produced by The Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage in collaboration with Bell Telephone Laboratories. Capturing Noise - Airs Nov 5th

Life in the City  from Noise: A Human History of Sound and Listening Professor David Hendy considers the comforts and irritations of next-door's noise . As cities grew, neighbor's hullabaloo became increasingly hard to escape. We will explore the writer Thomas Carlyle ’s grumpy attempts at soundproofing, before travelling to New York to imagine the teaming, boisterous world of the Lower East Side tenements in the early twentieth century. Capturing Sound from Noise: A Human History of Sound and Listening Sounds were ephemeral until recording technology made it possible to capture them. Professor Hendy of the University of Sussex introduces bottled moments from the past, including the voices of Robert Browning and Florence Nightingale as well as 9/11 answerphone messages.
