Enchanted, Entranced: Music and Spirituality from The Nerve
In Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and practically every religion around the world, music has been used as a tool to elevate the spirit or unite the faithful. Host Jowi Taylor examines how music has come to be so closely associated with the sacred, and how chanting, singing and drumming in unison produce tangible physical effects, evoking altered states from trance to exaltation. Many cultures consider music to be a gift from the gods. Apart from the claim that it is a gift from God, what is it exactly about music that makes it have such power over our spirits? We'll hear a variety of opinions from multiple faiths to address why music so enchants and entrances us.

Capturing Noise - Airs Nov 5th

Life in the City  from Noise: A Human History of Sound and Listening Professor David Hendy considers the comforts and irritations of next-door's noise . As cities grew, neighbor's hullabaloo became increasingly hard to escape. We will explore the writer Thomas Carlyle ’s grumpy attempts at soundproofing, before travelling to New York to imagine the teaming, boisterous world of the Lower East Side tenements in the early twentieth century. Capturing Sound from Noise: A Human History of Sound and Listening Sounds were ephemeral until recording technology made it possible to capture them. Professor Hendy of the University of Sussex introduces bottled moments from the past, including the voices of Robert Browning and Florence Nightingale as well as 9/11 answerphone messages.
